Summary

On a statewide basis, transportation became the largest source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in 2020. In 2019, Colorado passed legislation to address climate change and set science-based GHG reduction targets of 26% by 2025, 50% by 2030 and 90% by 2050. These reductions are based on 2005 levels. The state Greenhouse Gas Pollution Reduction Roadmap identified transportation as the largest single source of GHG pollution in Colorado, with medium- and heavy-duty vehicles responsible for 22% of on-road transportation GHG emissions as well as ozone precursors━and addressing these emissions is critical to meeting the state’s GHG reduction goals. In July 2020, Governor Polis signed a 15-state memorandum of understanding to advance a transition toward zero-emission electric vehicle (ZEV) trucks. A new study was just released that studies the challenges and opportunities to transition medium and heavy duty vehicles in the state to zero emission, clean technologies - like battery-electric vehicles and fuel cell electric vehicles.
